if u ever wonder how europeans can rely on trains so much to travel thru entire countries

image

this is why

(312km/h is about 194mph)

? Yea is this not the same everywhere??

image

doesnt seem to be

Also, most areas in America don’t even HAVE passenger rail anymore

The automotive industry purposely tried to kill off trains here in America

Public transit in general if we’re being honest.

As an europeean, what the fuck america?

if you ever see something weird about america chances are it’s because some powerful industry decided to kill something that would have worked towards the public good for profit

im actually speechless

I actually did this for math finals

For my English essay we were allowed a sheet of notes so I literally spent a week developing THE perfect essay and then summarising each paragraph into one line of shorthand in tiny writing 100%, A*

in US Government last year our teacher said we could have one notecard to use as a cheat sheet and gave us a whole packet (meaning like 10 pages) of things that would be on our test. he said, and i quote, “there is no way to fit everything youre going to need on there so you better study”
i fit every last piece of info on that card and didnt study at all
i got an a

moral of the story: dont tell me what i can and cannot do

before my midterm in Modern Physics, my teacher told us a story about how one kid kept switching glasses during an exam. he walked over and the kid had red glasses and blue glasses and kept switching between them because he wrote his notecard in red and blue ink. he made a 3d note card.

Student Brain: heh heh, teacher doesn’t expect this, i am expert cheater >:)

Teacher Brain: lol, gonna force them to go back through all their note, read it closely, figure out how which bits are the most important and then summarize and paraphrase all that information – meaning they’ll have a richer, more meaningful understanding of it – then copy it out by hand further reinforcing the knowledge, especially if they then use highlighters or coloured pens.  Ultimately it’ll be too much information to ever read fully in an exam setting anyway, meaning it’s only useful for minor details and formulas they need to reference… which I care minimally about, since it will just help support the more important conceptual knowledge they can demonstrate.  And they’ll do this all willingly because they think they’re pulling a fast one. Fucking NICE.

y’all do realize, that with the intense effort it takes to plan and create these sheets, that you’re studying, right? you’re totally studying. love, a TA.

The best way to study even if you can’t bring a cheat sheet is to make a cheat sheet and write everything you would write on one if you could have one. It’s an awesome method!

Masha The Hero

They forgot the part where the ambulance actually stopped to let the cat in

oh good I was worried

What a good cat. What a kind cat. How can anyone not love cats they are so good and loving.

they also forgot the part where they only found the baby because masha was screaming her head off bc she knew this baby was in danger. she went around outside the alley the next morning and yelled at passerby until she got one to follow her to the baby. she kept him warm all night and then made sure someone found him. she was adopted after this bc she was a stray and is in a loving home and is a hero

Hero cat

Thank you, Masha, you’re such a good girl.

Rogue One would always fly with their group, because the Force was with them.

Please read this if you want to make a sick boy happy. Lorenzo Snippe is a 9-year-old boy from the Netherlands who is very sick. In 2016 he was diagnosed with leukemia and in 2017 with x-ald. On the third (3) of February is his tenth (10) birthday, and it will probably be his last. Because he can’t get any visitors due to being so sick, his parents have asked people in this news article to send him a happy birthday postcard as soon as possible.

If you’re able to, please send him a postcard wishing him a happy birthday and tell him where you’re from! If you can’t, please reblog this post to make sure it will reach as many people as possible! His address is:

Prinses Wilhelminastraat 22

7753 TM Dalerpeel

The Netherlands

He really loves animals, so it would be great if you could send a postcard with an animal on it or something like that!

Don’t send him or his family rude things and don’t use his address for other things than described in this post!

Hey, if you can afford a postcard and postage, this one is from January 2019 and is actually relevant right now. (you can verify the date with the article linked in the OP.)

Postcards are relatively cheap internationally. (Don’t use “regular” postage calculations, use “post card” postage calculations; they’re different.)

Don’t forget his name:

Lorenzo Snippe

How about we vote in a law that puts a cap on how long a government shut down can happen… say 20 days… before the president has to agree to a budget solution or else the 21st day congress begins the process of impreachment because civilian jobs and salaries and livelihoods are not a bargaining tool for the president to abuse is order to get their way

If you aren’t serving the people then you aren’t doing the job of the presidency and you need to be replaced

AMEN

This is the first time it’s been the President’s fault. Usually it’s idiots in Congress.

Some Republican has been trying to pass a bill that would stop government shutdowns altogether since 2010. That would be a better solution in the long term.

Not that the Fart doesn’t deserve to be fired.

Fun fact, if the Canadian parliament doesn’t pass a budget, it automatically triggers an election where we vote in a new parliament, and therefore a new prime minister. Because why shouldn’t you be fired if you can’t do your job?

Not-so-fun fact, this doesn’t happen everywhere.

Out of curiosity, how long do they get to wrangle?

The government can take as long to wrangle until the budget is due. We have a multi-step process for getting the budget together so we can normally avoid it in the first place. If on the day the budget is voted in it is denied, it’s a vote of no confidence.

All services continue regardless, and while the election is taking place the GOP who got the no confidence vote essentially safeguard the services until the election is over. If they run out of money, they can request emergency funds from the Governer General.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.macleans.ca/politics/ottawa/how-canada-avoids-u-s-style-government-shutdowns/amp/

https://www.cbc.ca/newsblogs/politics/inside-politics-blog/2013/10/government-shutdown-could-it-happen-in-canada.html

Seems like a good system.

The one being proposed, that keeps failing, is that any time the budget isn’t agreed on in time, the government is automatically funded at current levels until they make up their minds.

But yours has more consequences.

The problem is that the US has specific rules about when general elections take place. They can’t just be called.

So if you lived in a society where you had to secure your communication in order to be yourself around others, here are the apps that could help you do that.

Signal let’s you securely text and make phone calls.

Onion Browser allows you to surf the web without leaving a trail.

Duck Duck Go isn’t super secure but it won’t record your searches like Google.

ProtonMail is a email client that lets you email other secure email accounts.

Periscope allows you to stream live video.

Semaphor is there so you can securely make group chat rooms.

American privacy laws allow you to use these all. So that’s pretty cool.

Bunch of protests this weekend so here’s some added tips. Don’t officially sign up for them, many RSVP’s are a Terms of Service saying you will fully and quickly follow every direction an officer gives and protestors often do get arrested for a number of (bullshit) things. Signing proves you were there and may give up other rights you have depending the TOS. (Normally your right to sue if something bad happens.)

If you do sign one, make sure you are on your best behavior don’t want to risk everyone on the list because you were forced to jaywalk and the police start grabbing whoever is close for it. And now suddenly warrants are going out days later for more people.

Don’t fingerprint or face unlock your phone. Neither are legally protected by the 4th amendment.

If you are white and privileged dress like you are going to church and use that privilege as a buffer between anyone who might be trouble and someone who needs protecting.

99% of protests are actually nothing but shouting chants and waking peacefully along. Expect the best but prepare for the worst.

UPDATE 1/15/2019

image

Face ID and finger prints are still risky but it’s now legally protected!!
